DC Comics MMO Game Gets Unreal
Batman & Co. will be playing with the same stuff powering Gears of War.
Sony Online Entertainment has been especially secretive about the massively multiplayer online game it's doing for DC Comics, but a recent licensing agreement revealed this week casts a faint light on what we can expect.
SOE said on Thursday that it has signed an agreement with Epic to use its Unreal 3D engine for not only the DC universe-based MMORPG but also other unnamed titles.
"Our development teams are very excited about harnessing the power of Unreal Engine 3," said SOE's John Smedley in a press release.
"The combination of a top-notch graphics engine and a robust set of design tools will enable our teams to deliver incredible and innovative game content for next-generation consoles and the PC."
The Unreal Engine 3 is a software toolset that lets game makers spend less time working on the core mechanics of the game and more time on tweaking those mechanics to make an enjoyable experience.
Epic's engine has been used a lot over the past few years and has made its way into games as diverse as Splinter Cell and Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone. The most recent version is also powering Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 2007.
