Sony Says Roaring DS Not Affecting PSP
You would think that the success of the DS Lite would have some effect - not so, says Sony.
Nintendo's DS is the portable of choice in Japan and it recently because the best selling handheld in the UK too. But this has not come at the expense of lower PSP sales, insists Sony.
Speaking to game blog Joystiq, Sony's John Koller said that even the white-hot launch of the redesigned DS Lite isn't harming Sony's portable much.
"There has been no impact on sales," Koller told Joystiq. "We have had steady sales since before the DS Lite and to today."
Koller pointed out that lifetime DS sales have trailed those of the PSP by "approximately 900,000" and that the PSP has had the best first year of any other Sony game system.
There has been some talk lately about a successor to the PSP, but Koller sidestepped the issue, pointing rather to the evolution of the current incarnation.
"There are plans in place of how we're going to grow the console," he said.
"We've talked about how the PSP at its very base is going to be how you see it today in terms of form factor design and whatnot. As far as what is included in any next-gen PSP we haven't even gotten into yet. We're looking more at enhancing the current version."
