Cars Pulls Ahead on UK Charts
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories loses its hold as a wave of movie tie-ins batters the industry.
Say what you will about the quality of the films attached to them, but there's no denying that having a game based on a movie can yield the good stuff. Case in point: Cars, THQ's new game based on the Pixar movie of the same name is the new No. 1 on the UK charts this week.
Cars toppled Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, ending its five week run on top thanks to a major boost at the film's theatrical release that saw sales nearly double last week's take.
It doesn't stop there either. The full Top 40 list has no less than 10 games based on movies, including two in the Top 10 based on Johnny Depp's latest Pirates of the Caribbean sequel.
Nintendo seems to be putting its hopes for the DS on word of mouth support to keep its games floating, and it seems to be working. There aren't any new games of note coming to the DS until November, but that's not too much of a problem, because Nintendo is already doing well with two DS-exclusive games in the Top 5.
Below are the top 10 games in the UK for the week ending 29 July, as determined by Chart Track:
- Cars (THQ)
- Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (Rockstar)
- New Super Mario Bros (Nintendo)
- Pirates Of The Caribbean: Legend Of Jack Sparrow (Ubisoft)
- Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? (Nintendo)
- Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Buena Vista)
- Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (Konami)
- The Sims 2 (EA)
- FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 (EA)
- Over The Hedge (Activision)
