Goodbye Dual Shock, Hello Sixaxis
Sony finally cops to the official name for its now rumble-free non-Shocking controller. Pricing details inside.
The controller for the PlayStation 3 may look very similar to the current Dual Shock 2 controller, but since Sony has decided not to include rumble in the controller, that Shock part doesn't fit so well any more. Which is why Sony has given the controller a new name.
The new moniker, Sixaxis, taps into the degrees of freedom gifted by the motion-sensing controller Sony has touted over the last year. It's also a palindrome.
There has been speculation for a while that Sixaxis would be the final name, but it took until this week for Sony to officially confirm it. According to Sony's Japanese website, the wireless controller - you can use a USB cable to connect it too - will cost ¥5,000 (£23).
Sony said the PlayStation 2 memory card adaptor, which lets you use your old memory cards on the PlayStation 3, will cost ¥1,500 (£7), and there's a remote coming too. That will set you back ¥3,600 (£16).
Europeans will need to sit tight until next year, when the PlayStation 3 launches in March, to find out how much they will be paying.
