PS3 Held Back by Cell Jump
Yes, the Blu-ray slowed things down too, but the real culprit is the Cell processor, says the ex-boss of Sony.
We're just weeks away from November and the eventual release of the PlayStation 3, which is coming nearly a full year after Microsoft put out the Xbox 360 worldwide. According to Sony's recently retired boss, the only reason Microsoft had that luxury is because Sony was aiming higher.
The PlayStation 3 is arriving a year behind the Xbox 360 because Sony chose to go with its much-touted new Cell processor, ex-company boss Nobuyuki Idei said at an event in Barcelona this week, according to a report at the BBC.
Idei had choice words about its competitor too, saying that Microsoft was able to get into the next-generation first because it "is not a technology company".
Idei, who ran Sony for the decade up to 2005, said that the Japanese consumer electronics industry is dying, according to the BBC, and warned that Japanese companies need to wake up to the idea that the TV was becoming a portal to the internet.
