FIFA Interactive World Cup Kicks Off
The only FIFA-sanctioned video game tournament.
Organised by FIFA, EA and Xbox, the third FIFA Interactive World Cup starts on the 27th of October - and as the world's only FIFA-sanctioned global video game tournament, anticipation is starting to reach fever pitch.
While Microsoft's promotional activity for rival football game Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is also fruitful with an Xbox 360 bundle announced last week, it's FIFA 07 that's getting the global, competition-based attention right now.
The competition combines online and offline action on the Xbox 360 version of FIFA 07, offering the chance to be crowned FIFA Interactive World Player 2006. The winner will be invited to the FIFA World Player Gala in Zurich on the 18th December - and, for the first time in the history of the tournament, will receive a cash prize of $20,000.
It's not too late to enter; gamers fancying their chances can practice their moves and hone their skills by playing the FIFA 07 demo, which is available free on Xbox Live Marketplace.
Competitors can attend one of the many FIWC06 Qualifier Events or enter the Xbox Live tournaments in 25 countries, from Mexico to France and from Taiwan to Scotland. More details can be found at the official tournament website.
Local winners from each of the FIFA Interactive World Cup Qualifier Events will progress to the Grand Final in Amsterdam on the 9th of December.
