Special Events for Game On Exhibit
Find out more about the past, present and future of games at the Science Museum in London.
The rapid-fire arrival of the next-generation consoles from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo is almost enough to make you forget about the decades of games that got us here. The Science Museum is hosting the ultimate reminder in its current Game On exhibit, which is running at the museum until the end of February.
Apart from playable versions of everything from Pong to the PlayStation 3, the museum is also hosting weekly events that go a bit deeper. Edge magazine editor Margaret Robinson starts the next wave of talks by asking why we play games.
Other talks lined up for January and February deal with the history of games, how they're made, specifically with relation to the Lego Star Wars series, and where we're going next.
Game On comes at an appropriate time, with the games industry looking back to its history in a more serious way than ever before. All three hardware companies have made the past a big selling point in their new machines, allowing you to download classics arcade and console games.
Below are details for the next four special events. Game On is running until the end of 25 February. More details can be found at the Science Museum site.
- 16 January: Margaret Robinson (Edge magazine), Why We Play Games?
- 22 January: Dr Chris Goran (Geomerics), Video Games: Look of the Future
- 2 February: IGDA speakers, Games Gone By: A History of Video Games
- 6 February: Jonathan Smith (Traveller's Tales), Building a Computer Game
