Dead Rising Gnaws a Million Brains
Capcom's zombie thriller hits the big time.
It's quite fitting that on the eve of the launch of its next big thing that Capcom has revealed that its last one has hit a major milestone. On Wednesday the company revealed that Dead Rising has sold a million copies worldwide by the end of 2006, according to GamesIndustry.biz.
Photojournalist Frank West's antics were destined for greatness, fuelled by a slow release schedule from other Xbox 360 developers and those greatest of video game antagonists: zombies.
The throngs of starved Xbox 360 owners who flocked from game to game en masse during the summer release wasteland stormed into Dead Rising. There were complaints about the unwieldy save system but people still bought it - in such large quantities that it was crowned the UK's fastest selling Xbox 360 game after its first weekend.
And since success and sequels go hand in hand, it's a fair bet that this isn't the last we'll see of Dead Rising, as Capcom's Mark Beaumont told GamesIndustry.biz:
"Bringing out Dead Rising," he said, "has allowed us to establish a new franchise that we can use for years to come."
It's not the only original property Capcom is working on for the Xbox 360. This week the company is releasing Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, a snowy third-person action game exclusive to the console.
