Ex-Guitar Hero Devs on Something 'Bigger'
Don't cry for Harmonix. The team may not be working on the Guitar Hero series anymore, but there are big things in the offing.
The Guitar Hero franchise came out of nowhere to become one of the most popular games this Christmas. Guitar Hero II sold 850,000 copies in the US during December and 1.3 million copies overall, and in the UK it debuted strong amid fierce competition.
Considering this, the news that Harmonix was leaving the series it created came as a surprise. Fans need not worry, though, as the developer says it is working on something that should push music games even further.
"Harmonix can confirm that we are not developing Guitar Hero 3," Harmonix's Daniel Sussman told Gamasutra this week.
"We are instead working on a different music game project, one that is a bigger and more ambitious endeavour than we felt we could pursue within the bounds of the Guitar Hero franchise."
Meanwhile, Activision has tapped Tony Hawk creator Neversoft to head work on the as -yet-unannounced Guitar Hero games.
Dusty Welch of publisher RedOctane told GameDaily last week: "We are excited to further the music and rhythm-based videogame genre, and Neversoft has the full experience, knowledge, and talent to do this."
Sounds like there's a musical fight brewing.
