Burning Crusade Fastest-Selling PC Game
At least it was if you consider North America and Europe. Staggering numbers inside.
The throngs of people on the streets last week were only the beginning for World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade. Fans have been waiting a long time for the first official expansion and they wasted no time in snapping it up.
Burning Crusade sold 2.4 million copies worldwide in its first 24 hours, according to numbers from Blizzard. And those boxes aren't sitting unopened. The company says that 1.7 million people sat down to upgrade to Burning Crusade on day one.
The game launched last week in North America, Europe, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. Missing from that list is China, home to 3.5 million World of Warcraft players.
In the UK, Burning Crusade ended its first partial week on sale as the second-best selling PC game ever, behind only Championship Manager '04. It still topped the weekly sales chart, ahead of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition for Xbox 360 and Wario Ware: Smooth Movies for Wii.
The Top 10 games for the week ending 20 January, as determined by Chart Track, are below:
- World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade (Blizzard)
- Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (Capcom)
- Wario Ware: Smooth Moves (Nintendo)
- FIFA 07 (EA)

- World Snooker Championship 2007 (Sega)
- Need For Speed: Carbon (EA)
- Call of Duty 3 (Activision)
- The Sims 2: Pets (EA)
