Hideo Kojima Looking Beyond the PS3
He's been stuck on Sony systems for some time now, but Kojima hints at life beyond Snake on PC and Xbox 360.
With a few exceptions, Hideo Kojima has been a one-platform man for the bulk of the last decade. There have been flirtations with Xbox and GameCube, but for the most part his blockbuster Metal Gear series has remained faithful to Sony's systems. However, that's not to say he isn't attracted to the other hardware players.
Kojima confessed in an interview with GamePro that he's interested in making something for Xbox 360 and PC. "I want to do it," he said, though he admitted that his team of developers isn't as enthusiastic.
Part of his reasoning for wanting to make a game for PC is because of the relative independence of PC game designers versus console game creators, because they are not beholden to a platform holder. "If [a new project] was PC," Kojima said, "we don't have to go into some crappy things with the first parties [Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo]."
As things stand though, Kojima says his work on Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is for the PlayStation 3 only "so far".
Though he hasn't been as involved in the day-to-day wrestling with the PlayStation 3, Kojima told GamePro he considers the PS3 difficult to develop for. For his team, that provides a chance for them to show off how they have been able to massage content out of the system.
Kojima stopped himself from airing all the PS3's dirty laundry, though.
"If I say too much, Mr. Kutaragi [father of the PlayStation] might get really upset," he said. "I think that the PS3 is difficult to work with, but so was the PS2."
