Nintendo Details Wii Action
People clearly like the Wii a lot, and they're not scared to take it online either.
Mario is nowhere to be found on Nintendo's new console but that doesn't seem to be tempering enthusiasm for the console.
Nintendo said this week that it had sold nearly 3.2 million Wiis worldwide in the six weeks up to the end of 2006. North Americans have been most enthusiastic, snapping up 1.25 million of those, compared to 1.14 million in Japan and around 850,000 across Europe, according to Next Generation.
The company has in the past shunned the internet but its fanbase hasn't done the same. Though Nintendo's hasn't yet released a game people can play online, as of this week 1.4 million Wii owners have taken their Wiis online. Between them, they've bought 1.5 million games from the Wii Shop for the Virtual Console.
As you'll have noticed if you've been in a store recently, Wiis are still hard to find. Nintendo is working hard to meet that demand and says it will hit its target of 6 million systems shipped to stores by the end of March.
