SCE UK Promises Biggest Launch Ever
Ray Maguire to battle SCEE for best volume.
Somewhat paradoxically, cries over the price of the PlayStation 3 seem to go hand-in-hand with fears over how many we'll get. The UK may be getting it a bad way as far as the price is concerned, but it seems that stock might not be as much of an issue.
"I will try to get as many units as I possibly can," Sony's Ray Maguire told SPOnG. "But it will certainly be the biggest launch that the games industry has ever seen, in terms of day one numbers into the marketplace. Probably over four times PlayStation One, and close to double the amount of PS2s."
Maguire said the process would be a logistical nightmare, combining sea and road transport. He added that PS3s are already en route to Europe for the 23 March launch.
How many will the UK be getting? Going by pure share of the overall PAL market, Maguire estimates that there will be around 220,000 PS3s at launch in the UK. That's more than enough to surpass the 185,000 units the current record holder, the PSP, sold at its launch in September 2005.
