PS3 Tilt-Controls Rubbish Says Sega
And, also consistent with public opinion, Sega developer says rumble will be missed.
Sony says the PlayStation 3 controller, the Sixaxis, lacks rumble because it interferes with the tilt-sensing abilities of the controller. Others point to the legal wrangling over the rights to the rumble technology used in past PlayStation controllers. Whatever the reason for its exodus, many feel the loss of rumble is major - people like Sega's Guy Wilday.
Speaking about the possibility of implementing tilt-controls with PSM3 magazine, Wilday, head of Sega Racing Studio and currently working on Sega Rally, pointed out the deficiencies of the Sixaxis.
"Tilt control's not difficult to do," Wilday told PSM3, as excerpted by CVG. "Fundamentally, though, the whole tilt control thing is rubbish. It's no compensation for rumble."
It's widely believed that Sony dropped the rumble feature from the Sixaxis after losing a lawsuit to Immersion, a company claiming rights to the technology behind controller rumble.
Several developers have said how disappointed they are with the lack of rumble in the Sixaxis, even as they look for ways to use the tilt-sensing features in their games - sometimes with poor results.
