GameCube Not Dead Yet
Just a flesh wound for the aging console.
Even though the world is buzzing about the Wii right now, there seems to be a lot of love left for the GameCube, as evinced by the brouhaha that sprang up this week when comments from a Nintendo spokesperson were taken to mean that GameCube production had ended. It hasn't, Nintendo has confirmed.
Nintendo UK's Robert Saunders said the company is "continuing production of GameCube hardware and software". Saunders did not comment on when Nintendo would pull the plug on the console.
The comments come after Nintendo's Perrin Kaplan told GameDaily recently that while there were still consoles to buy, none more were being built.
"Are we producing any more GameCubes? No," Kaplan said, adding: "But do we have the inventory there for people to still purchase? Yes."
Kaplan said that Nintendo was considering the GameCube as more of a starter system for people new to games.
Still, doom is probably not far off for the GameCube, especially considering that the Wii is fully compatible with all software for the system.
