Sony Shows Off PlayStation Eye Camera
You won't find it calling the camera a Toy this time.
Sony research guru Dr Richard Marks wowed audiences in 2006 with his melding of reality and virtuality in a demo for PlayStation 3 EyeToy game Eye of Judgment. Nearly a year later, Dr Marks's new gadget, now simply called the PlayStation Eye camera, is headed to stores.
The PlayStation Eye is a USB camera for the PS3 that captures video at 640 x 480 (60 frames per second) or 320 x 240 (120 fps) and has been designed to pick up images in low light.
As impressive are the promised features of the microphone, which Sony says will be able to pick up voices preferentially while blocking out background noise.
The camera will come bundled with EyeCreate, software that lets you takes photos and record audio and video, all of which you'll be able to later edit.
As for Eye of Judgment, which features cards that come to life for battle, Sony is still hesitant to reveal any release details for the European version of the game. In Japan, where the game is being developed, PS3 owners will be taking delivery sometime during the autumn.
