David Jaffe Opts for the Simple Life
He may have made God of War, but Jaffe's sticking with the smaller stuff now.
Making games such as God of War is complicated stuff, so much so that David Jaffe, the creator of the series, is swearing them off to work on games where it's easier to realize his vision.
Jaffe's latest game is Calling All Cars, a download-only PlayStation 3 game coming out later this month. It's his first game for Sony's PlayStation Network, but it won't be his last.
"[Download games are] all you're gonna see from me in the future!" Jaffe said in an interview with Kikizo. "This is the space I wanna be in. This is the space I wanna work, with this great team I have out in Utah, and I want us to make our mark in this space."
He described his career as a journey, one that's now at a point where he wants to make games that achieve what they set out to do - even if that means less praise and fewer sales.
"I only want to do games that I feel can reach a hundred per cent of the intention of the designers behind it," Jaffe said.
He said he has clear goals for Calling All Cars: "To provide people with fun, to make people smile, to make people laugh and trash talk with their buddies."
"I think that intent has been achieved much better than the intent behind God of War, which was to get people to feel emotional about the story and the characters."
How long until we see more from the outspoken creator? Possibly not too long.
"I'm doing the design for game number two and three right now," he said.
