The PlayStation 3 Shines, Briefly
Ups and downs in a rough week for Sony's console.

For a few days this week it seemed that Sony had managed to rub off the stains of negativity that have besmirched the PlayStation 3 over the past six months.
The company was in San Diego, showing off its wares for PSP, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 during its annual Gamers Day.
The event came at a time when several big companies, including Sega and Square Enix, have been showing their stuff - mimicking in some respects the normal flow, where publishers would have been putting out at the now-defunct Electronic Entertainment Expo held in years past around this time.
The last two E3's were all about hardware for Sony. With the console now out in all major regions, the attention has shifted to the games.
Sony's North American boss, Jack Tretton, acknowledged that the price of the PlayStation 3 was a "challenge" in an interview with Reuters this week.
"Hopefully content helps to deliver the proof points and the justification behind the cost of the machine," he said.
That potentially driving content was on display at Sony's Gamers Day, where games such as Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (from Naughty Dog, the makers of Jak & Daxter) and British developer Ninja Theory's action game Heavenly Sword stole the show.
The PSP, which has gathered a reputation as something of a harbour for console game revisions, was well represented, in particular by God of War: Chains of Olympus, an original title in the popular series being developed by Daxter creator Ready At Dawn.
But that's all in the future. In the here and now, Sony is feeling the apathy of buyers unimpressed by current PlayStation 3 offerings and put off by the price of the system.
