Sony Noncommittal on PS3 Price Drop
And history suggests there may be a while to go yet.
Analysts, publishers and would-be buyers alike have been calling for Sony to drop the price of the PlayStation 3 recently. This week the company again commented on the matter, and again it largely sidestepped the issue.
Three months after debuting the PlayStation 3 in Europe and six months after kicking the party off last year, Sony has told Japanese paper Yomiuri Shimbun that the company "does not rule out the possibility of lowering the price" of the system, according to the Associated Press.
This is less dismissive than comments in mid-April, when Sony's Mami Imada said the firm had no plans to cut the price of the console.
If history repeats itself, those looking for a drop could be in for a wait.
The PlayStation 2 went 19 months without coming down in price - longer than both the Xbox and the GameCube - according to new analysis by Next Generation, and that was despite the console having a similarly turbulent birth.
What the system needs, many observers have said, is more content. That's coming later this year, when games such as Grand Theft Auto IV and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and new features such as Home start to arrive.
