A New PSP? Not So, Says Sony
But the company stops short of a flat-out denial.
Parts of the always-entertaining internet have been buzzing lately with talk of a new PSP being in the works. Sony has stepped in to quell the rumours.
In a post on Sony Computer Entertainment America's new blog, PSP marketing manager John Koller tried to temper the chatter. He said Sony had yet to announce anything like the systems being talked about, though he stopped short of denying that Sony was reworking the portable.
Koller's proclamation comes after games blog Kotaku said that sources "close to Sony" had told it of the existence of a new PSP, possibly due later this year.
The system would not be a successor to the current PSP but rather something more akin to the DS Lite. Kotaku's sources say the PSP revision would have a smaller body, better screen and internal flash memory to speed up load times.
Koller's second bird was talk of a phone-slash-gaming device borne of a patent filing dug up earlier this month that outlined a device including a swiveling screen and mobile phone capabilities.
"We haven't announced anything about a new PSP, much less one that would have any phone capabilities," Koller said, adding that anything to that effect was rumour or speculation.
