Manhunt 2 Shelved
But that's not the end of the story - yet.
Banned in several European countries and unwanted by Sony or Nintendo in the US, Manhunt 2 is being shelved, Take Two has said.
The Rockstar parent company called the game "fine art" this week, but that hasn't changed the minds of ratings boards around the world who just don't want the game.
In a statement to GameSpot, Take Two said that it has "temporarily suspended" distribution of the game in the US.
Earlier in the week the British Board of Film Classification kicked off a spate of bannings, rejected the game outright and preventing it from being sold in the UK. The BBFC said it is willing to work with Rockstar to get the game into an acceptable form, though a spokesperson for the Board told Kikizo that was unlikely.
In the US, it's against the policies of both Sony and Nintendo to approve AO (adults only) games.
Will Take Two hang onto that last straw? According to the statement, the company will now "reviews its options".
"We continue to stand behind this extraordinary game," the spokesperson said. "We believe in freedom of creative expression, as well as responsible marketing, both of which are essential to our business of making great entertainment."
Manhunt 2 would have been released for PlayStation 2 and Wii in July. The company has not said whether the game is officially dead and did not return calls for comment.
