While you'll be able to take on single foes one-on-one, when tackled by multiple enemies you'll revert to QAEs, breaking out the big moves to deliver brutal finishing blows.
High Moon has put a lot of effort into the game's presentation, to ensure that it all looks just right. These ardent movie watchers have been taking notes, building ideas on how to make games look more like movies.
"As video game developers, some of us are starting to understand the rules of cinematography, the rules of thirds, how to frame a character, and how to make a dynamic shot," says Valdez, adding that the team thought of themselves as film editors when trying to create the game's dynamic camera movements.
The game is built on its gunplay and combat, but there are also high-speed sections, something High Moon calls Escape-and-Evade moments. This could be something as simple as sprinting to make it under a falling gate, but they will also occasionally take up complete missions.
Ulm says the team's emphasis has been on making sure the pace of the game is like the best parts of the Bourne movies. "I'll go on record," he says, "that we've succeeded there. I feel very strongly that cinematic kind of forceful push to keep the player going and feeling like he's under pressure is all in the game."
For all the work that's gone into making this the perfect translation of the feeling of the Bourne movies, the aspect of the game that will immediately strike many people is the lack of Matt Damon as Jason Bourne.
The Hollywood star's ending of his involvement meant that he was never going to get involved in the game. "We would have paid it," jokes Meelad Sadat, High Moon's director of business relations. But while in the movie realm, Bourne seems unthinkable without Damon (and we say this having just checked out the third film at a screening - it's awesome!), in the videogame realm, from what we've seen it's more a case of you're Bourne, and let the action begin...
But the simple fact is that while Damon may be done with Bourne, High Moon isn't. The studio isn't thinking of this as a one-off venture but rather as the start of something much bigger.
High Moon isn't making a game about Matt Damon. Says Ulm: "We're in the Bourne business."
The Bourne Conspiracy will be out for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2008.
