Will Wright Confirms Spore for Wii
And the creator talks about making games for everyone.
The question about whether Spore, Sims creator Will Wright's ambitious new galaxy-creation game, is coming to the Wii has been open for some time, but Wright has at last confirmed that, yes, the game will be out for Nintendo's popular console.
"We're doing Spore on the Wii," Wright said in an interview with the Guardian last week while in London to be inaugurated into the BAFTA Fellowship - a first for a video game creator.
It was the first public acknowledgment that Wright's new game would be coming to the Wii, something that has been rumoured for months.
Elsewhere in the interview, Wright spoke about his decision to create games with a wide appeal, despite his own tastes, which sometimes stretch well into the realm of the hardcore.
"I love playing shoot 'em up games, I really enjoy them - but it feels like that area is so overpopulated that as a game designer I'd rather work in an area that is under-represented. I've tended to work in areas that I feel it would be interesting for more people to go in.
"My first game was a shoot 'em up, but when I designed it I found that creating the world I was going to blow up was more interesting than blowing it up - that's where I came to SimCity."
Spore takes the ideas behind SimCity and The Sims to the next level, letting players get involved in creating creatures and populating planets, guiding them through their evolution into interstellar travelers.
The game has been delayed several times over the past year but it's nearly finished, with Wright saying recently that the game would be out within the next six months.
