The New PS3 is Not, Repeat Not, Failing
The Dutch say nearly half of all the new PS3s are dying. Not so, says Sony.
Sony is not usually one to respond to rumours but the company has pounced on a report this week that there are major reliability problems with the new model of the PS3.
On Wednesday, a report emanating from Dutch site Gamed said that Sony was seeing failure rates of up to 40 per cent on the new 40 GB PS3. The report, which has since been removed from the site, quickly went around the internet on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Sony stepped in to "categorically deny" that it was having such problems with its new hardware.
"We are very proud of the quality and reliability of PlayStation 3 and are disappointed that such extremely sloppy journalism has resulted in this totally inaccurate story," David Reeves, president of Sony's game division in Europe, said in a statement.
He said that failure rates for the 40 GB PS3 have been at "the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3".
The 40 GB PS3 is the latest version of the PS3 hardware, which Sony is selling for £299. Part of the drop in price over the previous model is down to the removal of the last support for PlayStation 2 games, which will not work on the new system.
