World of Warcraft Still Growing
But not as fast as before, it seems.
Through its latest earnings report Vivendi has revealed that its popular massively multiplayer online game World of Warcraft is still growing, though the numbers suggest perhaps it's not growing so fast these days.
Since the end of 2006, the population of World of Warcraft has swelled from 8 million to where it stands today, at 9.3 million. Most recently the subscriber pool has grown by around 300,000 since Vivendi announced it had crossed the 9-million mark in late July.
Compare that with the one-year stretch from December 2005 to December 2006, during which the more than 3 million people signed up.
Part of the growth seen this year was the result of the release of the first expansion pack, Burning Crusade.
Developer Blizzard is adding more content to the game through the next add-on, called Wrath of the Lich King, but the company has yet to say when it will be out. Blizzard is also working on the long-awaited sequel to space-themed real-time strategy game StarCraft.
