'Superfast' Internet Access Coming to UK
Not quite 100 Mb, but we're getting closer.
Many people living in the UK will agree that when it comes to broadband infrastructure, the country is lacking. Stories of 100 Mb connections in Scandinavia and the Far East have many gamers turning green, but Virgin Media may just have something to return that colour.
Virgin said in a press release this week that it's planning to roll out 50 Mb cable-based internet access this year, after positive comments following trials in Ashford, Folkstone and Dover.
Virgin is promising to make the service available to 9 million homes in the UK by the end of 2008.
People interested in getting cable internet access through the company can check if the service in available their area on Virgin's site.
Not ready for that much speed? Don't despair. Virgin also said this week that as of February it will be upgrading all of its 4 Mb cable connections to 10 Mb.
Speaking with Kikizo, a Virgin spokesperson said that cable-based internet access "has a natural advantage in responsiveness (or ping) when it comes to games, giving cable customers a competitive edge in multiplayer games. With our free 10 Mb upgrade, customers will be able to connect to game servers faster and download levels quicker, as well as benefit from increased speeds to help with downloading game demos and patches."
"Gaming is a key area that will benefit from this speed upgrade," he said.
