Fight Night Creator Takes on Gears of War
But don't take that as confirmation that there's a sequel coming. Sigh.
Through the hard work of developer Epic Games, Microsoft established Gears of War as one of the biggest series at the company. With rumours of a sequel announcement swirling, Microsoft has placed the series into new hands.
Speaking with IGN last week at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas, Microsoft's Shane Kim confirmed rumours that longtime EA producer Kudo Tsunoda, alumnus of Fight Night Round 3 and Def Jam Icon, has joined Microsoft and will be guiding the Gears of War series.
"We wanted to put more focus behind [Gears of War], and it's great to get a creative lead like Kudo," Kim told IGN.
Gears of War was released on the Xbox 360 in November 2006 and was one of the biggest games of the year, selling more than 2 million copies in just six weeks. Late in 2007 a version of the game was put out on PC that included five new story missions.
Tsunoda will be Mr Gears of War at Microsoft, working with Epic on whatever the pair of companies has in mind for the series.
For now, that doesn't include a sequel. Just last week Epic rubbished reports that it had started talking to the press about a possible sequel. Kim told IGN that Microsoft is still trying to make the most of what it has.
"I think there's an awful lot we can do just with version one of Gears of War," said Kim.
