Nintendo Undecided on EU WiiWare Launch
But over in the US, the service is due to ramp up this spring already.
The Virtual Console got Wii owners used to the idea of downloading classic games, and with WiiWare, set to arrive later this year, Nintendo is hoping to the do the same for new games.
The company announced on Wednesday that it will launch its new download service in the US on 12 May, though it stopped short of saying which games would show up.
Representatives for Nintendo in Europe contacted by Kikizo were on Wednesday unable to confirm any details about the launch of WiiWare outside of the US.
Already confirmed to show up via WiiWare are new games in the Pokémon and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles universes. But it's not just known brands. Nintendo speaks of WiiWare as a "virtual laboratory" for game developers and the system is attracting attention from game makers of all sizes.
Veteran British game maker David Braben and his studio, Frontier, will be among the first to use the system.
The company this week unveiled LostWinds, an action-packed adventure about a young boy named Toku and his clash against evil forces threatening Mistralis. One of the main themes in the game is wind and how that is used as a tool by players.
In an interview with Gamasutra, Braben said that the idea behind LostWinds predates the Wii, but that the capabilities of the system won him over.
