BioShock 2 Coming in Late 2009
The series moves away from 2K Boston. Stow your torches - Levine is still involved.
Take-Two's high-brow shooter BioShock was a darling of the media in 2007, earning not only glowing reviews and several armfuls of awards but it also selling more than 2 million copies. On Tuesday the company confirmed that work has begun on a sequel.
In its latest earnings report, in which Take-Two reported another loss, the publisher said that development on BioShock 2 is underway at its 2K Marin studio, which was formed late last year.
There are no confirmed details about the game yet - it's rumoured to be a prequel - but Take-Two did say that it's eyeing a release in the fourth quarter of its 2009 financial year, which would put it in stores between July and September of that year.
Despite BioShock moving from 2K Boston, where project lead Ken Levine is based, to 2K Marin, Take-Two confirmed in a conference call (full transcript at Seeking Alpha) on Tuesday that Levine will be involved in the new game.
"Ken is a terrific asset in the company and he's a brilliant game developer. We're really excited to have him," Take-Two's Benjamin Feder said during the conference call.
"He will be working on Bioshock 2 and he will be working on the new [intellectual property]. A lot of the work will be done at 2K Marin but that's not to say Ken is not involved. We think he's critical to Bioshock and he's critical to new IP in the company."
