iPhone: Games Most Popular on App Store
Apple says that games available on iPhone and iPod Touch are outperforming other types of application.
In an interview published today on Kikizo, Apple executive Greg Joswiak revealed that games are driving App Store sales, selling more than other types of application on the service.
The VP of iPod and iPhone product marketing at Apple said: "In the time since launch there were 6,000 applications in the store and over 200 million downloads - and the biggest category has been games."
The Apple exec said there are numerous advantages to App Store deployment. "There are no physical goods to worry about - no licensing or hardware manufacture, getting forecasts wrong, having to take product back, returns from customers, dealing with bugs - a lot of things that make the physical business difficult."
Joswiak would not be drawn on sales specifics of the iPod Touch, saying: "We haven't broken the iPod line-up into its variants, but we've sold 175 million iPods, which is a lot of iPods. Obviously Touch is a portion of that, which we haven't disclosed. We have disclosed the iPhone number -- I think the last one we gave was 13 million. Last fiscal year we sold 55 million iPods, and Touch is now a growing share of the iPod market."
In the full interview, Joswiak also refused to "geekify" users' knowledge of the product by revealing details on the graphics processor used by the devices.
