How much do we want some PlayStation 3s from Sony? Enough to actually DO SOME EXERCISE?! It looks that way. Following on from the success of EyeToy Kinetic comes EyeToy: Kinetic Combat, a fitness program very much like the original Kinetic, only with the focus on - surprisingly - combat training.
Using the EyeToy peripheral, players (combatants?) are involved in a whole host of different regimented on-screen exercises and are made to kick, punch and dodge their way to becoming a fit, fighting machine over the course of a 16-week workout program.

So great, what we have here is a press release for the game. But what else could you expect? It's not a game in the traditional sense, and though some of the exercises are a fair bit of fun they aren't the kind of thing that will bring gamers of all persuasions together for the first time in history. Kinetic Combat is a fitness program that can be used by those too scared to join a real gym or those with too little time on their hands. Or embarrassed fat people. Like me. [And me - Adam].
If you have the commitment to go through with the 16-week program there will be benefits - the combat training is more geared to fitness than kicking arse, mind, but either way there is a clear benefit from this so called 'working out'. Whilst the feedback from the personal trainers obviously isn't as good as it would be from a real life trainer, the game does only cost a one-off fee of around twenty quid. Not twenty quid a minute.
Basically - it does a job and it does it well, but how many people will take this seriously? Dancing around in front of a room full of people trying to clean windows or head an imaginary football is one thing, but taking time out of one's schedule to take part in serious fitness programmes conducted via the PS2? It's not going to have mass-market penetration.
It's difficult to know what to say - on one hand Kinetic Combat does its job and it does it very well. On the other, it's hard to see much point in this 'game', other than for lifestyle obsessed persons with no access to proper gyms or dojos.

THE VERDICT:
Those who have the drive and commitment will see actual, real-life benefits to the 16-week programme in Kinetic Combat, but 90 percent of PS2 owners surely aren't likely to care enough to go through with it? You can have a lot more fun with other EyeToy games and - if you have the money at least - there are a lot more benefits to joining a real gym. This one has gone right over my head, let me tell you.
