MotorStorm
It's the flagship European launch title and fortunately, it's every bit as lovely as your shiny new console.

The high dynamic range lighting in MotorStorm is irresistable; tilt the camera towards the blue sky with the driver still in view, and he appears dark; point it down towards the radiant orange ground to feel its warmth, and the driver is bright and vibrant. Many new-generation games are pulling off HDR admirably, but there's something about it in MotorStorm that looks pornographically attractive.
Perhaps it's the harmony of all the effects that makes MotorStorm so visually convincing; bump-mapped surfaces and water look real, flags wave and metal reflects, terrain deforms, mud splashes, and the dusty particle effects all look fantastic. Additionally, a real feeling of scale suggests that proper thought has been put into how best to use a HD screen. The art style is vibrant, with everything from original vehicles to menu screens and logos presented nicely. Meanwhile, licensed background music, including the likes of Nirvana, has an open-air concert feel to it, so it feels like you're in the great outdoors, not sat at home on your PS3.
"The only way to play other people is online, but here's thing: online racing in MotorStorm rocks."
|
MotorStorm oozes replay value based on the fun factor, but only in multiplayer. When it comes down to it, the singleplayer game is a relatively bare-bones affair, and once you've finished it, you've finished it. There's little in the way of additional modes of play or hidden surprises - although there's still some downloadable content to look forward to on the horizon which is nice.
There's no split-screen multiplayer either, and the only way to play other people is online. But here's the good bit, online racing in MotorStorm rocks. Since we started playing early builds of the Japanese version of MotorStorm we've been dying to race people online, and the manic style of racing is perfect for online battles with as many as twelve players.
You just choose from all the vehicles available up front, and jump into the race. It would have been nice to have a more detailed leagues and stats structure for the more, ahem, competitive online gamers, but for me, jumping into a race and winning (or more often, not quite) is want I want. The lag-free MotorStorm races are what I've been waiting for, and there are no signs of it getting boring.
Evolution must be saluted for putting together such a great package that in many ways wipes the floor with other first generation software on the PS3, but it should think about addressing the singleplayer longevity issues with its downloadable content by adding some sort of new play modes, rather than just a new track or two (though that's welcome too). We'd love to see all that in the downloadable update, but can't help but wonder how much more the team might be able to achieve with a full-on sequel.
