Thank god for the absorbing multiplayer. The generous supply of weapons form a stable foundation upon which to build the game's fast, fun and, most importantly, firm online modes. Where console gamers have had to suffer through staccato gameplay as player counts cross into double-digits, Resistance laughs off 30-player matches, keeping everything smooth and responsive. That lets you forget about the technological tethers and instead concentrate on blasting away Bill1946 in New York.
But there are niggling concerns to point out. It's in Resistance's multiplayer modes that the shortcomings of the Sixaxis and the PlayStation 3 become most readily apparent. The loss of rumble hurts Resistance by taking away a tangible connection with the game world. This is annoying in the singleplayer game when you're faced with the sometimes-ruthless AI of the Chimeran elite, but its deadly here, where the heat of competition exacerbates the deficiency.
"Maybe Sony will deem the game patch-worthy once the inevitable rumble-equipped Sixaxis is released."

Choosing the right map for the number of people you have playing is crucial in Resistance, because the player counts can vary wildly and the maps are singular in their allowances. The large ones are truly massive, multilayered beasts that lose their edge when too few players are on board, while throwing a full count into the smaller ones makes for an instant bloodbath - especially annoying in the die-twice-and-you're-out Conversion mode.
But there's an unfettered enjoyment that courses throughout and that makes Resistance a must-play game on the PS3. While the passing months have dealt the game a blow, it's one that the strong gameplay in the single- and especially multiplayer modes brushes off. Resistance isn't reason enough to buy a PS3, but if you are getting one, it's one of the games you have to play.
It was among the best reasons to own a PlayStation 3 at the debut of the console last November and despite the intervening months, which saw some spectacular games on the Xbox 360, it has turned out to be one of the reasons why Europeans should be excited about Sony's new system too.
