It's a good thing then that the combat on the ground is just as fun as it is in the air. What initially struck me as a superfluous add-on (before I played the game) turns out to actually be the most fulfilling part. The most important feature of the ground forces is that they can use turrets and rocket launchers to blow craft out of the sky - crucial for balancing the gameplay. The mighty Warhawks (and the identically handling Nemesis aircraft) seem that much more fallible when you know that a couple well-placed sniper rifle shots can bring one down.
Having skipped over most of the Battlefield-style games in which so much value is placed on true cooperation, I found it both fun and rewarding to be part of a cohesive team. I say cohesive, but it's sadly not as straightforward as that. To get the most out of Warhawk you really do need to have a compatible headset so that you can communicate with your team and better arrange your strategy. The maps, some of which are giant, are far from straightforward, and working out a plan for taking over principle locations is key.
Warhawk is probably most important because it gives the PlayStation 3 another exclusive game that works well online - an aspect in which the console has mostly failed to match the Xbox 360. Jobe said in an interview before the game's release that the team had decided to drop the offline modes because they just didn't match up. Some people moaned. They won't be doing that anymore.
