Far Cry Vengeance
The real price of fiscally rushed games.

There's a moment at the start of Far Cry Vengeance that provides an apt analogy for the game, summing it up much better than a videogame review could. Having been imprisoned and beaten for what can only be described as an indiscretion so petty it could only have come from a videogame storyline, our hero Jack Carver catches a break when an explosion outside blows his cell door open.
"That's my cue to leave" states Jack, and if only he did. But no; instead we are forced to endue what is perhaps not quite the worst videogame ever but one that definitely has been rushed out the door to coincide with the explosion that is the launch of Nintendo's Wii.
"The visual quality of Far Cry is so poor you'll be wondering if this is an old-gen N64 title, never mind GameCube."

Those boffins at Ubisoft must somehow have decided that everybody must be within a couple of feet of the screen (perhaps to make people cross-eyed so that they can't focus on the appallingly bad graphics). How else does one explain the continued interruption by this pop-up message which freezes the game and ruins any limited enjoyment that was being had? It is impossible to continue to play unless you reposition yourself closer to the TV and hit the OK button.
No other Wii games complain about where I sit whilst playing and in-fact, even when this message is displayed on-screen I am still able to aim the with the remote and select the OK button (although Far Cry stubbornly refuses to do anything unless I move closer). The movement of my remote is obviously being recognised! Why must I be closer?
Anyway, perched on the edge of the coffee table then, and back to the game... We all know that graphics are not what the Wii is about. No, instead it is about exciting new control methods and new ways of interacting with the game. The new-gen Wii will never be able to match true next-gen machines in terms of graphical oomph. Having said that, the visual quality of Far Cry is so poor you'll be wondering if this is an old-gen N64 title, never mind GameCube. Hands that look like mud, terribly pixelated textures (especially the shadows), invisible walls, non-destructive scenery with hardly any interactivity - you name it, every one of gaming's no-nos is here.
