Whichever way you look at it, 2007 was a spectacular year for games. It didn't matter which console you owned or the type of games you liked to play, there was something for everyone this year.

Part of the excitement was down to the new hardware. Both the Wii and (later in the year) the PlayStation 3 started to show what they were capable of while developers making games for the PC and the Xbox 360 continued down their relentless path towards graphical realism, cinematic presentation and tight gameplay.

With the quality of games we were presented with this year, the task of whittling that imposing stump down to just the 10 best games was not an easy one. You may disagree with the list below, particularly if your favourite isn't represented, but each of the ones we selected pushed games ahead in its own way and excelled at bringing to life its initial vision.

Here are our picks for the best games of 2007. How many did you get around to playing?

10. Skate (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)

Hard as it is to believe, Activision's Tony Hawk series has been around for more than eight years already. And while the first two or three games in the series were remarkable for what the were, the formula has started to taste a little samey. Good thing then that EA dropped in with its own skateboarding game in 2007, a game that throws out convention and tackles the mechanics of skateboarding in a whole new way. And that's where most of the fun lies.

While Skate game is not perfect, the skill with which the team has managed to bring skateboarding to life is something to be admired. Those who have never stood on a board before may be slightly thrown by the way the game plays, but for anyone who's ever taken the time to learn how to ollie, Skate is a game that will let you pull off all the tricks you always wished you could do and make you feel like you learned something too.

9. God of War II (PlayStation 2)

With the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 grabbing all the headlines in early 2007, it was inevitable that Kratos's second outing on the PlayStation 2 would be somewhat overshadowed. But that doesn't change that God of War II was not only one of the best games of 2007, but one of the best games in the lifetime of the PlayStation 2.

Outgoing director David Jaffe handed control of God of War to Cory Barlog, who took everything that made the original game such a hit and expanded upon it. There's more action, more puzzles, more violence and more pure gameplay in this sequel, which just happens to be among the best looking games on the system as well. If ever there was a game to send off your PlayStation 2 in style, this was it.
