Splinter Cell: "Chaos Theory" Official
UbiSoft has confirmed rumours that Splinter Cell 3 will actually be called Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. New details and two of these utterly pointless "3D screenshots" inside.
UbiSoft announced this afternoon that Splinter Cell 3 will now be known as Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, as we cleverly reported in our recent massive Splinter Cell 3 blowout.
The stunning sequel will hit Xbox and PC in time for Christmas this year, today's announcement also reveals.
The growing trend of subtitling a game in favour of shoving a number on the end is arguably to disguse the ever increasing reliance on established IP rather than investing in creating original brands.
Nonetheless Splinter Cell Chaos Theory will likely be one of the greatest examples of how to 'do' a videogame sequel to date. As one judge commented at the recent E3 2004 Awards, the series has genuinely evolved considerably with every instalment, something that is only achieved very rarely in gaming.
UbiSoft is again claiming the best looking game ever, a pretty bold claim, but perhaps not so outrageous. Florence Alibert offered, "With the unbeatable combination of Ubisoft's technological prowess and visionary creativity, it will be the best-looking game on any platform!"
It is the first time exclamation marks have been used inside the quotes of an industry executive in a press release for some time, experts warned.
UbiSoft revealed two of these currently trendy "3D screenshots" to celebrate the announcement. Now personally I think these tings are utterly pointless. For what amounts to about two seconds of footage, you need a file of several megabytes, and then you have to physically drag the screen around which becomes boring in a matter of miliseconds. Why not just release proper video footage instead? Or just get on with it and release some nice screens? Sigh - the things these guys do for attention these days.
Still fear not, as you can watch five minutes of Splinter Cell Chaos Theory footage here, thanks to Kikizo. And as for these new ridiculous "screenshot" files - see below. Now please, go away!
