After bringing parts of the internet to a standstill in late March with the release of the first trailer (watch it here in 720p HD) for Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar is starting to open up more to the press through more traditional means.
The company granted US magazine Game Informer a cover story that includes more details than were included in the initial glimpse of the game.
According to the article, the lead character in the game is an East European man named Niko Bellic. Just like generations of immigrants before him, Niko is drawn to Liberty City by the American Dream, only his trip is fuelled by e-mails from his cousin Roman that tell of women, money and lavish lifestyles.
The game begins as Niko arrives in America and discovers that Roman has been deceiving him. Rather than lounging about in hot tubs with women, Roman is struggling to survive the debt he has built up with the more nefarious citizens of Liberty City. Roman is said to be a key contact for Niko in the opening section of the game.
Liberty City of 2007 will be familiar to series fans, but it's been given an overhaul. This is a bigger city than has appeared in previous games, and it's more accurate - even if Rockstar has avoided calling things by their real names.
Four of the fives boroughs that make up New York are included, as is a portion of neighbouring Queens. Numerous landmarks have also been recreated, though Rockstar has given them its own touch, turning the MetLife building into the GetALife building, the Statue of Liberty into the Statue of Happiness and more along those lines.
