Oh, the irony! What with this being the 7th release in the Ace Combat series, yet with a Roman numeral of X one might think that Namco were making a point at being self-referential in using the subtitle Skies of Deception. Still, as deceptions go it's hardly a biggie, especially not next to the hackneyed plot to which it refers.
Bad storylines aside though (which surely gamers are used to by now), and what ACX has to offer is probably the finest example of arcade-style aerial warfare available on a handheld console today.
Set in 2020 and with barely plausible place names and other dubious sounding nouns, you play as a pilot in the Gryphus Squadron for the nation of Aurelia. It's up to you and your team to liberate your country from the surprise attack and occupation by the neighbouring Leasath, who provide a formidable foe with their flying fortress, the Gleipnir.
"The variety of missions and battle options add replay value, and make ACX a joy."

Once unlocked, they can then be purchased from your hangar using credits accumulated on each mission. Extra weapons also become available to purchase as do upgrades to certain craft. All in all, the cost of these available upgrades and extras are far in excess of what you will earn the first time through and so replaying missions becomes a necessity.
The mission select screen handles this and allows you to try any already completed mission. Initially one might think that this would be a burden with all missions being of a similar shoot-down-the-enemy-aircraft affair. Not so. The variety of missions on offer as well as options, in terms of which aircraft/weapon combo you can equip, adds replay value and makes this a joy.
Sure, destroying enemy planes plays a big part, but you also have intercept missions, boats to destroy, covering fire to provide for your ground troops, radar installations to take out and electricity lines to follow in order to cut the power to a defensive grid. And if that wasn't enough, take-off, landing and mid-air refuelling mini-missions are on occasion thrown into the mix. These are skippable mind, should you want to get straight into the action.
