Graphically, things are well above the norm. Planes are well modelled, mountainous regions look great, explosions are fiery enough and weather effects such as clouds and rain are convincing, all wrapped up in impressive handling mechanics and a nice front-end menu system.
The one drawback is that when combat takes place above urban areas and what looks like a bustling cityscape below turns out to be a simple flat textures. Still, one cannot judge too harshly given the restrictions of the platform.
Audio too is spot-on, with a fast-paced, techno-style soundtrack accompanied by both enemy and friendly radio-chatter to add a personal touch and give you guidance.

With several different branches, this is one game that will keep you coming back for more. Add in multi-player support for up to 4 players, with several different game modes on offer and bonus extras such as unlockable aircraft colour schemes and different medals to be earned for certain in-mission tasks and the sky quite literally is the limit.
With all this in mind, it's perhaps hard to believe that the series has made it this far without setting the world alight. One can only assume that despite doing a lot right, Ace Combat has been flying well under the radar.
Indeed, After Burner is probably the most popular brand in this genre that will spring to the mind of most gamers, yet it has very few sequels and each of them barely scratch the surface in terms of the depth on offer in Ace Combat X. Indeed, the Top Gun license has many more titles in its ranks despite all of them being poor quality and widely derided. The closest most of us got to being Maverick was the Ray-Ban sunglasses and (for those lucky ones amongst us) a leather bomber jacket.
Now though, with Ace Combat X you can get that little bit closer.
