The last Sonic game I had to review managed to annoy by being altogether Not That Great. Since then there's been Sonic Unleashed, which was even worse and now we have a Sonic the Hedgehog game where he is transported to a fantasy medieval world to battle an evil King Arthur.
And he uses a sword. Sonic the Hedgehog uses a sword. A talking sword. Hmm.
Nonetheless, we shall approach this is a professional, straight-forward and mature manner, dissecting the gaming experience as is required for a true critique of entertainment software. Even if Sonic immediately (once again) reveals himself to be an irritating git.
Sonic and the Black Knight follows the template laid out by Secret Rings - run straight into the screen, avoid obstacles, fight a few enemies.
The addition of a sword mixes things up a bit, and a swipe of the wiimote makes the blue twit bring down the might of Calibur, his really dull and unfunny sword, on the legions of evil shadow beasts that pop up all the time.
There's no real art to this - simply hold up on the nunchuck's control stick and waggle the wiimote until there are no more enemies in front of you and you'll finish most levels in under three minutes.
There are times where different objectives force levels to last that little bit longer - handing rings to villagers or the truly spectacular (for all the wrong reasons) boss battles - but generally no level takes more than a couple of minutes.
This isn't a handheld game though, so why are the levels so very short? And easy? Is this a game for young, unskilled, short-attention-spanned children? Not according to the PEGI rating of 12+, no.
It's just short and easy.
