The elements thrown in to mix the experience up a bit don't exactly make for a thrilling experience, either, in fact only serving to prolong the boredom prevalent throughout the whole game.
What do developers add these days to 'mix it up a bit'? Yes, you guessed it - quick-time events. Surprise, surprise, they pop up in a few boss fights through SatBK - "thank crikey!" you may think, "this will certainly add a whole new dimension to the gameplay and extend my enjoyment of the world of Sonic the Hedgehog!"
Unfortunately, these QTEs involve repeating the same actions a few times before moving on, thus placing them firmly in the realms of Not Adding Anything to the Game Whatsoever.
Another element in that particular pile comes in the form of the unlockables and the encouragement to replay levels. When you've just spent two minutes failing to enjoy the most pointless experience of your life, it's hard to understand why you'd actually bother to replay the damn thing.
And as for the unlockables - well, they add a few things to the customisable elements of the main game, which are pretty rubbish if I'm being kind. Either that or they open up new multiplayer elements.
Ah yes, multiplayer. It's utter twaddle, basically. A complete hack-job, thrown in at the last minute to give some air of depth to the experience and - in the grand scheme of things - adding absolutely nothing at all.
At all.
But enough about the actual game - we all know you came here to check out the badass story on offer. I mean, why else would the cut scenes be so long, so pointless, so painfully awful and so, so, so rubbish?
Sonic, displaying his usual ATTITUDE, is an irritating fool. His sword is dull and unfunny. All the peripheral characters are lame in the extreme. Shadow is in it, which tells you a lot. And just when you think a particular scene is over, it probably isn't, as the exposition tends to last around four or five times more than the individual levels do.
It's an interesting (read: stupid) choice, of that there's no doubt.
No, this is not a good game. It manages to lose the confusing element of charm Secret Rings held on to, thus plunging it from half-playable to really pretty bad.
