Sumo Digital: The Making of Rub'a'Dub
We get some insight into the making of one of PS3's best downloadable games from the console developers of OutRun2 and Virtua Tennis 3.

The small team at Sumo Digital behind already-released Super Rub'a'Dub showed us the progression that the game went through - how it started, and how it ended up.
"One of the things I want to debunk is the myth that this came from the Sony E3 demo, the bathtub demo!" insists Sumo Digital's Steve Lycett. "It was something we developed from along different lines; Sheffield Hallam University came to us with a technology demo... any objects within the water in this prototype were affected by the flow, and the potential was great... but you could get stuck and end up fighting upstream - not necessarily fun to play. So we tried to expand on it and, you know, if you're a duck, why not rescue some ducklings? It gives you a purpose and a reason!"
The resulting Super Monkey Ball-style (or even Chu Chu Rocket-style) game has turned out remarkably well, particularly with the Sixaxis motion control that is definitely well suited to this sort of maze title.
You can go check it out yourself on PlayStation Network today and enjoy some of the game's 60 levels, but will Sumo jump onto Phil's user creation Game 3.0 bandwagon for users to come up with their own? "We could, maybe in the future, put out level designers," Lycett told us, "we obviously have one to put ours together... so, maybe, we'll see."
The top-ranked players in the world get bragging rights with a rare Golden Duck and the ability to show off replays of how they completed the levels with mind-bending skill that even the designers hadn't preconceived. "It's something to aspire to", added Sumo's Tom O'Connor. "It's nice to have really simple games on your [PS3] hard drive alongside big games, just to have a quick go on."
Steve agreed: "You can just kinda duck in and out."
