The first few levels of Yoshi's Island teach you the moves, and the learning curve is set perfectly through the five worlds. With eight levels in each world, it's not the biggest game Nintendo has ever produced, although the last few levels can become very, very tough. I wasn't the only person who had to shamefully turn to the Internet for help on one particular level.
Aside from this incredibly frustrating point I found the game tough but fair. There are a few moments where the two screen system used on the DS causes problems as there is a blind spot between the two screens, however Yoshi has the ability to look up and down so you can have a glance before continuing on your adventure.
Rings in the levels act as checkpoints, where you can restart should you be killed. If you're hit by a monster, you lose the baby from your back. If you don't manage to pick the baby up in time, then Magikoopa's helpers will come and grab it, and it's another life lost.
Luckily, if you pass a ring this grants you an extra five seconds, and certain clouds, if hit with eggs, will release stars to collect which also give you more time. Finding all the special coins, flowers and stars on each level will unlock bonuses such as mini-games, giving added replay value.
Unfortunately none of these mini-games are up to the standard found on New Super Mario Bros. They're based on the player performing different tasks as Yoshi, so unfortunately it's a missed chance to get interactive with the DS' touch screen.
