Extra lives are abundant in Yoshi's Island on the DS, and if picking up 1-ups and coins in the levels themselves isn't enough for you, there are bonus mini-games after some levels which allow you to collect more. After gambling around 20 lives on the roulette I was left with over 100 lives, which was more than enough to finish the game. You can also win lives on a game of chance by picking boxes before meeting Magikoopa, or a memory game of matching cards.
The sound in Yoshi's island is much like the graphics - cute and fitting. It doesn't push any boundaries although it doesn't annoy you either. I'll never tire of the "yum" Yoshi lets out when trying to eat a victim!
My favourite part of Yoshi's new DS adventure was definitely battling the bosses. With two bosses on each world it's always a kick figuring out how to maul the minions Magikoopa makes massive. Bowser himself is particularly impressive, and simply dropping the drawbridge from under him is not going to cut it this time!
While Nintendo have released a game that is addictive and will hook you enough to keep you engrossed until it's finished, Yoshi's Island DS simply can't stand up to the quality of New Super Mario Bros. Little touches such as the mini-games seem to be afterthoughts, and are few and far between.
But it's still a fine buy for those who relish the prospect of landing on the edge of a bamboo branch after jumping through a hoop of fire whist simultaneously egging happy smiley floating flowers.
